Jeff Sessions will be in Reno on Monday. The following is from the Nevada Progressive Alliance about actions being
taken in regard to his visit.
RENO, NV –
On June 25th at 8:00 a.m., PLAN Action, Battle Born
Progress and partnering progressive allies are protesting U.S. Attorney General Jeff
Sessions appearance at the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) School Safety Conference in Reno. The groups will be holding a press conference before the protest to express why Sessions is not welcome in our city.
Four months ago, Sessions announced that the Department of Justice was going
to provide additional funding to arm education personnel and school research officers in the wake of the Parkland shooting. Instead of working to protect our students, teachers, and sanctity of our schools, Sessions decided to bring more guns into schools
and participate in “research” about school safety that does not look into school shootings and the prevalence of guns in schools.
In addition to endangering our children in schools, Jeff Sessions is also the
man who is separating children from their parents at U.S. border. Session’s policy of family separation at the border is inhumane and incredibly damaging to the children NASRO works to protect. While Session’s and President Trump have stated that child separation
will no longer occur at our borders, those previously separated will not be quickly reunited. Rather, those separated will continue as they are.
We urge NASRO to revoke Jeff Sessions’ invitation. We recognize this invitation
as being complicit with his actions and see it as a means of rolling out the red carpet for Sessions’ brand of racist hatred and vitriol. Absent a formal condemnation of Sessions and his policy, it makes NASRO an accomplice in the internment of children at
the border .
